CBD Studio Spaces!

Posted 19th August 2008

GASWORKS STUDIO DEVELOPMENT - OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTIST GROUPS OR COLLECTIVES AS WELL AS INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS

If you haven't heard about the goss... the City of Perth has given the former Gasworks building in Wellington Street to Artsource for the next ten years, allowing them to expand their studio programme into the CBD!!! Haven't we all been waiting years to hear news like this!

Artsource are holding an information session on site for artists from all artforms who may be interested in leasing studio space in the building.

There are several discrete large spaces in the building and we are keen to hear from individual artists as well as groups of artists who may be interested in submitting proposals for the joint use of particular spaces. The building could then be fitted out to suit the group needs. Some areas could be suitable for light industrial processes.

The information session will comprise of a presentation by Jeph Neale from the Artery Coop in Melbourne (www.arterycoop.com.au) on the history and operation of this successful cooperative working space. This will be followed by a walk through the building in anticipation of proposals from artists/artist groups for possible uses of the spaces.

The session will be held from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursday, 21st August 2008 at the Gasworks, 337-345 Wellington St, Perth

Please RSVP to Marc on 08 9335 8366 or email: freo@artsource.net.au

FREE GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB (NYC) WORKSHOP THIS WEEKEND

There is no doubt that graffiti has been a hot topic in Perth over recent weeks. With debate over regulating laws, sentencing and civilian rights, what better time to throw a little extra light on the subject.

A surprise visit this weekend by the renowned arts group New York's Graffiti Research Lab (GRL) will add a splash of non permanent colour over inner city streetscapes, as high tech laser technology allows participants to 'tag' skyscrapers and other city surfaces.

GRL have been in Australia staging a large project with the Adelaide Festival, ARTRAGE invited them to visit Perth, and they were only too happy to oblige.

In an age where graffiti is plastered over the walls of high end galleries and featured on every second clothing and lifestyle product, yet the act of just carrying a can of spray paint can land you in serious legal trouble, Graffiti's place in today's society is an issue that needs some focus and discussion.

Join the Graffiti Research Lab as they explore the issues and show their work at a free presentation and forum this Sunday followed by an 'open workshop' for all interested on the streets of Perth.

FREE GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB PRESENTATION 7 - 8PM SUNDAY MARCH 9 AT THE BAKERY ARTRAGE COMPLEX

Art for Life

Community Graffiti Art project

WHERE: Alderbury Reserve near Perry Lakes Skate Park off Oceanic Drive
WHEN: Sunday 9th December 2007 10am to 5pm

Art for Life is a community driven graffiti art project that involves 20 Graffiti Artists painting 20 memorial paintings for families who have lost a family member through a drug, alcohol or suicide related death.

This is the first time this event has been held, with the project being run by Nadine Reeves. "I was inspired to do this project after losing my Father this year from smoking related Cancer & another member of our family to a drug & suicide related death. I wondered what could be done to make a difference & came up with this project." explains Nadine. "There are many amazing urban artists in this community and the big issue young people face today is the drug related culture & painting legally. I could see the need for these Artistss to have the opportunity to create art that makes a difference to other people, to raise their profile, & to encourage the wellbeing of these young people. The families will know that they are not alone & have a wonderful art work to keep."

Thanks to Ironlak, The Butcher Shop, Bunnings, Protek, Carribean Kitchen, Captain Coffee, Discount Bookworld and The Town of Cambridge for their support of this project.
